Tedlar
Tedlar® is a registered trademark of DuPont, representing a highly durable polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) film known for its exceptional resistance to harsh environmental conditions. This versatile material provides long-lasting surface protection across a wide range of applications, including architectural, industrial, and transportation sectors.
The PVF polymer was first developed by DuPont in the 1940s, and by the 1950s, the company began creating products based on this innovative material. In 1961, DuPont officially registered the Tedlar® brand name in the United States and began construction on its first Tedlar® production facility in Buffalo, New York.
In 2012, DuPont completed a major capacity expansion to meet growing demand for the material. Today, more than 50 years after its introduction, Tedlar® film is widely recognized as the industry standard for high-performance surface protection, offering unmatched durability in even the most demanding environments.

Why Do Customers Choose Tedlar® PVF Film?
Tedlar® PVF film was recently selected as the protective roofing solution for Sea Crest Condos, a six-story beachfront property in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Originally built over 20 years ago, the building faces constant exposure to the harsh, corrosive conditions of the Atlantic Ocean. Over time, its steel roof panels and framing had suffered severe corrosion, prompting the search for a more durable, long-term solution.
Construction Metal Products (CMP), a leading panel manufacturer in the Carolinas, was tasked with managing the renovation and recommending suitable materials. The project team was presented with two options:
- A standard coastal paint finish on aluminum base metal, which would require ongoing maintenance, including annual inspections and documentation to preserve the finish warranty.
- Tedlar® PVF film applied to aluminum base metal, offering superior corrosion resistance with no maintenance required to uphold the finish warranty.
Given the harsh coastal environment and the desire to minimize long-term maintenance costs, the building owner selected the Tedlar® option for its proven durability, aesthetic longevity, and maintenance-free protection.

For the Sea Crest Condos project, aluminum panels laminated with Tedlar®—supplied by Metal Alliance—were ultimately selected for their unmatched durability in coastal environments, even just 1,500 feet from the ocean. Tedlar’s® excellent flexibility allowed the film to conform to tight bends and edges on the roofing panels without compromising adhesion or integrity. This ensures the roof maintains both its structural protection and visual appeal for decades to come.
Installers praised Tedlar® for being significantly more durable and resilient during installation compared to traditional PVDF/Kynar® paint finishes. They also highlighted the ease of installation and the impressive final appearance of the completed roof.
The project was installed by RPI Roofing, with panels fabricated by Construction Metal Products using Tedlar®-coated coils provided by Metal Alliance. Metal Alliance offers Tedlar® products with up to 50-year warranties and no coastal restrictions, delivering a revolutionary level of protection to the metal building panel market.
